Fall Fruits and Veggies
As we roll into fall you may think your days of eating fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden are over, but think again! The fall months still produce a wide variety of fresh, seasonal foods, which tend to be the freshest and cheapest to purchase.
Here’s a full list of fresh produce you can seek out as the weather cools down and fall approaches:
- Apples
Apples are a staple of fall, so it should be no surprise that this fruit is in its peak season in September and October. If you go apple picking and find yourself with a bundle of fresh apples and an itch to attempt something new, try making these baked cinnamon apple chips. Baking the apples will allow them to stay fresh longer, if you don’t eat them all first!
- Beets
One of the more vibrant vegetables, beets add a nice pop of color to any meal. They are also high in antioxidants and can be an aid in recovering sore muscles, so beets are both beautiful and helpful. For an everyday take on beets, check out this potato and beet salad.
- Broccoli
Many of us grew up with broccoli on the dinner table, and while it may not have been everyone’s favorite, we’ve made great advances in cooking over the last several decades to improve the taste for those that are not big on this cruciferous vegetable. If you are one of the skeptics, try out this crowd-pleasing roasted broccoli recipe that is easy to prepare and pairs well with chicken or steak.
- Cranberries
High in antioxidants, but lower in sugar than many fruits, cranberries are a great alternative for your next fruit-based recipe. You may think of cranberries as a winter fruit, but this crop is harvested from mid-September to mid-November. If you are looking for a tasty fruit dessert to make for your next family dinner, this cranberry pear crisp should be a hit.
- Eggplant
Eggplant hits its peak season in early fall, so keep an eye out for deals on this produce. Eggplant is packed with fiber and potassium and is highly versatile. It can be grilled, made into eggplant parmesan, or even added to chili for cooler nights.
- Pumpkin
The star of the fall season — pumpkin. This fall staple is in abundance during the fall months and can be found in everything from your coffee to your soups and even your workouts! Try combining pumpkin with cranberry to make these yummy scones for crisp, fall mornings.
