Sick of being stuck at home? We are looking for volunteers for this year’s Tour of the Gila bicycle race happening April 27th to May 1st! Come on out and enjoy Spring weather and many opportunities to be a part of this iconic event. Volunteers are needed to support our racers through driving positions, and course marshaling. No experience necessary! All volunteers receive a race staff t-shirt and an awesome thank-you party!  Shake off the cobwebs and celebrate the return of the Tour of the Gila for its’ 35th year!

Thank you for your interest in helping to make the Tour of the Gila happen. Every year, over 500 people volunteer their time to create the well-organized event we are known for. This is a great way to get involved with the race and enjoy more insight into the sport. All volunteers will receive a t-shirt and an invitation to the post race party. There are several ways to volunteer for the Tour of the Gila. Sign up by filling out the registration form below or call Jack Brennan at 575-590-2612.

Volunteer Roles

Course Marshals:
Course marshals are assigned positions along the course to keep traffic and pedestrians off the race paths and direct racers at specific points. Although marshals are necessary for each stage, the greatest need for course marshals is Stage IV – the Downtown Criterium.

Drivers:
Drivers are needed for all 8 categories for Stage I, Stage II and Stage V. For the UCI Men and Women events, drivers are needed to carry the officials as well as Sag vehicles (the last vehicle in the race). The remaining 6 categories are neutrally supported, which requires racers to check in wheels that are then placed in vehicles to be given out when needed during the race. We also need drivers to lead each race and to carry officials. Drivers are needed for the Wednesday stage – Silver City to Mogollon; Thursday stage – Ft.Bayard loop through Pinos Altos and the Mimbres back to Ft.Bayard; and on Sunday – Silver City to Hanover, Mimbres etc… ending in Pinos Altos. This is an exciting way to be right in the action of the race and the gas is paid for by the Tour of the Gila, Inc. Contact  Michelle Geels at 575-590-0203.

Host Housing:
A wonderful way to get to know the people traveling here from all over the US and foreign countries as well. The travel aspect is expensive. You can help if you have spare beds available. The riders are responsible for their own food preparation, so if you have the room, contact Host Housing or call Jack at 575-590-2612.

Technical Team:
A core group that is responsible for setting up and tearing down of each stage. This requires moving the Podium platform and start/finish line structures and hard fencing.

Signage:
Placing signs along the course ahead of each race. This includes each stage except Stage IV, the Downtown Criterium. Gas is provided by the race.

Team Support:
Professional teams and individuals are often in need of assistance with neutral feed and other team/event support activities.

Team Liaison:
Consisting of networking for teams. Requires extensive familiarity of bicycle racing and knowledge of the area.

Medical Personnel:
Medical professionals are needed to staff finish line first-aid tents to treat injured racers. Please contact Mike McMillan at mmcmillan@swbji.com.
