2020 Fitness Trends
The last decade really taught us a few lessons in fitness: goat yoga is a thing, P90x is not for everyone, and shake weights won’t give you the arms of your dreams.
However, a few fitness fads have caught on over the last decade and have made their way to the top spot on the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual report on the top fitness trends for the coming year:
Personalized Training
Workouts feel different when you have someone guiding you. You can relax knowing that you are performing the exercises and pushing yourself correctly. This assurance allows you to be pushed out of your comfort zone, build your mental resilience and improve your fitness over time. Virtual coaching programs, such as JRNY, help guide you through every workout and create custom workouts that adjust time and intensity over time. Further, with digital platforms like JRNY you can access trainer-led videos and stream your favorite shows for more guidance and motivation while you work out.
Training with Free Weights
People love the convenience that training with free weights offers. You can do all of your favorite strength training exercises from the comfort of your home. Whether you are using kettlebells or dumbbells, free-weight training can provide you with a full-body workout.
Another benefit of free weights, is they are compact and can fit in small spaces, like apartments. By having adjustable kettlebells and dumbbells in your home, you gain access to multiple weights in one compact product.
Group Training
We’ve all seen the craze behind group training and without a doubt this trend will transcend into the next decade. Whether from home on your connected BowFlex C6 bike or in the studio, group training adds a level of motivation and accountability.
Bikes, such as the C6, digitally connect to popular third-party apps – allowing them to ride with their favorite trainers via streaming on-demand classes from Peloton, or interact, train and compete against others on Zwift.
Health & Wellness Coaching
The biggest lesson to be learned is that fitness should work your mind and body. Repeatedly, we see a false narrative shared that exercise is only about weight loss. Exercise offers a multitude of benefits that goes far beyond counting pounds on a scale. Health and wellness coaching includes stress reduction, building physical strength, and helping to reduce the likelihood of cancer, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease. Additionally, it helps provide a vision for goals using behavior change and intervention strategies.
