3 Ways To Use Bone Broth
You’ve likely heard a lot about bone broth lately. It’s trending in the health and wellness world and is taking over shelf space in grocery stores – but all for good reason. The healing benefits of bone broth are many – it’s anti-inflammatory, improves joints, boosts immunity and promotes detoxification, promotes a healthy gut, hydrates the body, improves skin, hair, and nails, and the list goes on. But one of the best benefits, I think, is the rich, delicious depth it brings to almost any dish.
The other day I was craving broccoli cheddar soup, and when gathering ingredients I thought, you know what? Let’s skip creamy liquids and use only bone broth for the base. While I’m not eliminating dairy at the moment, I reserved my calories for cheddar cheese (because, cheddar cheese). I use potatoes in my broccoli cheddar soup, which, when blending a portion of the soup to thicken the base, adds a creamy texture that won’t even make you miss the heavy cream. And when paired with the bone broth you get a nice richness while bringing along valuable protein and nutrients.
Moral of the story: keep bone broth on hand and use it in everything. Here are a few of my favorite ways to incorporate it into your daily routine.
Sip on a cup
Warm it up, sprinkle in a little salt and pepper and favorite seasonings, and you’ve got yourself a healthy sipper. An 8 oz serving of store-bought bone broth has almost 10 grams of protein and is rich in collagen and other nutrients.
Sipping on a cup is especially helpful when fighting a cold, so add this to your natural remedy bag of tricks. Bone broth also aids in exercise recovery, providing a post-workout protein boost while restoring electrolytes and rebuilding tissue.
Use in soups and stews
If you’re making a recipe calling for chicken or beef broth, use bone broth instead. Bone broth only makes things better – this is my promise to you. So next time you’re making a favorite soup or stew, or even a sauce, try using bone broth in your base and reap all the delicious, healthy rewards of this magical liquid.
Give vegetables a flavor boost
Cauliflower rice, beef and broccoli, sauteed mushroom and onions, mashed potatoes – these are just a few of the dishes I love taking to the next level with bone broth. I’ve said it before, but it's worth repeating, everything is better with bone broth. If you’re trying to work in more vegetables to your diet but find yourself craving decadence, add a bit of bone broth to your saute for a flavor boost.
The fall and winter months are all about comfort food, so recreate favorites with bone broth instead of cream-based vegetable dishes like I did in this green bean casserole makeover.
Tip: You can make bone broth at home using bones from the local butcher. But if you’re like me and want an easier way to keep bone broth on hand, pick up a shelf-stable container from the grocery store. You’ll find it in the natural foods aisle or anywhere you’d usually find broths and soups.
